guest: i am not sure that john boehner will be at the table. he said it is now up to the senate, i am going home. it is not taking my ball and going home, but it is doing as much as you can. he is literally looking to his republican colleagues in the senate to work with harry reid to get something acceptable. if he does, that will put significant pressure on house republicans that did not otherwise exist. i want to push back a little bit. since may, i thought that john boehner -- he made a speech back in december where he talked about $1 for spending cuts for every $1 increase in borrowing. red meat for the tea party wing. it was clearly an attempt to say, i am your guy. it is not clear to me at the moment that, one, anybody would want the job, and two, that there really will not be a challenge. it has to come together very quickly. they do not need somebody to beat boehner. all the have to do is withhold 18 republican votes in the house. he would get an absolute majority in would not be elected speaker in the first round. >> robert williams sa

a lot of them were imported from the staff of john boehner. guest: we are so used to these losing presidential campaigns, the two running mates, in and it was not so vivid in this case. in fact, what i think was less though, but even compared to other campaigns, paul ryan wanted to be more of a jack kemp conservative, talking about empowering lower-income voters. he was denied a way to do that in a full throttle way. there was what we were just talking about in a while. he advocated early on to do an automotive advertisements based on his home town in wisconsin, which had a big gm plant. guest: he supported the bailout. it is " yes. but i think they got along pretty well. there were some areas of tension, but for the most part, for all of the buzz about paul ryan when he was picked, he became a pretty conventional running mate in terms of his impact, which was not very significant. host: we go now to our caller. caller: thank you. the presidential level, 2016, in particular, with hillary clinton it appearing to be already the nominee, and then

how does john boehner come out looking after what happened over the past four weeks? guest: it is hard to see anything positive. he took on the negotiants for the republicans. he failed to get his own house to come along. plan b, clancy, -- plan c, and now he is seated negotiants to harry reid. -- negotiations to harry reid. it is certainly possible that he may have trouble getting reelected as speaker. he may get 20 or so to party boats to vote against them or not vote at all. i could stop him from being reelected. host: what are the pitfalls for harry reid and mitch mcconnell? guest: mcconnell is up for reelection in 2014. if he agrees with the white house on something, particularly tax increases, it will hurt him in his election. remember rand paul -- mcconnell has less room to maneuver. for harry reid, a lot of his reputation is on the line. can he put something on the floor of the senate that some democrats will support? guest: the biggest loser is the unemployed and those trying to get jobs. that is what this is about. really, people need to step back and realiz

we can all see what has happened in the press, now i like john boehner. but gee whiz, this is a pretty big political battering he is taking. what he should do is allow a vote in the house of representatives on a bipartisan bill. it will pass. democrats will vote for it, some republicans will vote for it, that is what we're supposed to do. he's trying to pass everything with that majority that he has that can't agree on anything, among themselves. bring in the democrats, that is what the country was set up. our founding fathers set it up that way. he wants some other method where everything was done by a slim majority that they have. this is absolutely incredible, mr. president, and we believe that the speaker should be concerned. i'm confident that he is. maybe he's more concerned as some have said, about his election to be returned as speaker. he should be more concerned about what is going to happen to the country. if he showed leadership and walked out there and said this is the right thing for the country, we're all going to vote on this, democrats wo

i think john boehner went through a devastating experience this last week when he called for a vote and did not have a vote. his troops abandoned him. it has been ongoing for a while, his relationship with some of these freshman. he is having a difficult time and i think he has been rendered -- left in a weakened state going forward. i think the people who still have power here -- the white house and the senate -- suddenly i think there is more and more attention given to senate republicans. it is not clear whether mitch mcconnell wants to play a role because he has a campaign coming in 2014. for some people on the far right, the idea that mitch mcconnell would make a deal with obama could be acceptable. you have 10 or more republican senators who say they are willing to do business with president obama in terms of approving an increase in the marginal tax rates. if that is the case, if you could get them to pass some kind of bill and then send it on to the house, and all boehner said was i will allow a vote, and you have democrats and some republicans feeling pressure joining in, you c
